Leadership is a journey not a destination: it takes time to build Credibility, Competence and Relationships

Phil Rose talks to Michael Tanner about building leadership so that people genuinely want to follow. From his 28 years experience in both military and corporate roles Michael has seen what it takes to truly lead people – and it’s not about rank, title or authority – it’s about true Servant leadership.

Key Points in the Show:

•               Servant Leadership and the servant coach – the most influential form of leadership

•               What military leadership teaches us – it’s not about rank, it’s about caring for the people you are leading, to ensure they can succeed

•               Leadership and followership – and how creating a willingness to follow is key

•               People do what I ask them to do because they want to vs doing it out of fear

•               Blood, sweat and tears vs doing it for money – purpose led leadership

•               Purpose is about a shared goal that needs to be communicated

•               It’s about togetherness – we’re in their together…

•               Management and Leadership – and how to measure effectiveness

•               Management as a Noun – a person place or thing vs leading the people. You can manage inventory, or buildings, but you need to lead your people

•               Measuring Effectiveness – how is it traditionally measured… you can’t change the score at the end of the game… Attrition is a rear view mirror measure…

•               The Leadership Equation: Credibility, Competence, Motive and Relationship

•               The most important is motive… mathematically – and practically – do your team perceive your motive is selfish or self-less?

•               How will your team score you vs. how you score yourself?

•               Relationship… is also most important – at a personal level. How well do you know your team members? Really?

•               Why’s he asking me to do that? … but I have a good relationship with my leader so I can understand it’s important to do this task…

•               Proximity and Distance… how do you get close, while also maintaining distance from your team? Share what you feel appropriate to generate a deeper relationship

•               Patrick Lencioni’s ‘5 Dysfunctions of a Team’ and the ‘Personal Histories’ exercise

•               “The Leadership Challenge” – Credibility is the foundation of success – track record speaks volumes

•               Competence vs Credibility – how do you build each?

•               Credibility comes from lots of ‘small wins’ – always do what you say you will do… and that creates a track record (Integrity)

•               The equation enable leaders to identity where they can improve – relative to self not others

•               The best… and the worst leaders… title and authority didn’t make them the best… ‘It’s nothing to do with title and position’

•               What’s the basis of your competence, i.e. are you a good sales person with a need for management competence and training

•               What gets measured gets done…

•               The future of leadership 2022 and beyond: people don’t generally leave bad companies, they leave bad leaders… The rise of servant leadership – that’s the power

•               Advice for your younger self: Focus on Motive! Are you selfish or self-less?

•               Express appreciation and give credit – move from about me to about them

•               What I’ve learned: constantly and consistently build your knowledge: Leadership is a journey not a destination
