Why putting systems in your business is good for you AND your business
Phil Rose talks to Alexis Kingsbury on today’s show about how he created AirManual through a focus on purpose and systems. AirManual helps you run your business smarter, something Alexis and his co founder wanted based on his experiences of failing to do it first time round. As a serial entrepreneur Alexis realised he needed to put systems in place to enable his businesses run without him present each time. When he got ‘busy’ he struggled to find a way through. He then recognised that to scale he needed people and processes. There’s learnings in there for all of us. Enjoy the show.
(Some of) The main points for listeners:
• When to recognise that you can’t do it all alone… and step away from the mentality of ‘it’s quicker if I do it myself’
• Spidergap, Alexis’s first business, struggled to achieve its targets because of a lack of systems and a episode of bad hires
• Learn how to delegate effectively so you can free up your own time
• In the beginning a lack of clarity of Purpose and Values impacts the engagement of your team – so get on it early by asking your team to co create those values that drive them
• Ask ‘what do you care about?’
• Review your values and purpose with the team frequently and discuss how those values help you operate
• Question yourself on how your values and purpose differentiate your business from the competition
• ‘Catch people’ doing the value ‘right’ – and identify what that means in terms of behaviours
• Airmanual is a tool that helps businesses create and update their processes easily – the goal is to remove stress from the business. Making sure you can take time off knowing the business is running smoothly. It frees up more than 15 hours a week – what’s that worth for you?
• Where would you spend your time if you had those 15 hours extra?
• Why getting clear about what you care about is so important in helping you scale
• Where are you on your journey? Is your business serving your purpose? If not, what do you need to do?
• Identify the biggest challenge in your way today and learn how to get round it – which books do you need to read to progress?
